Lego Collectable Minifigures Series 13 (71008) Review by WhiteFang

WhiteFang Lego Collectable Minifigures Series 13 Review

Lego is on a roll with their Collectable Minifigures. The newest Lego Collectable Minifigures Series 13 (71008) has a release date of January 2015. Which means you can probably expect a few retailers to sell them at the end of December. So, make sure to save up your Christmas money because there are a lot of great figures. Series 13 continues the trend of extremely detailed Minifigs, while increasing the quality. These figures are still made in China but a lot of the production problems of the past have been worked out (slightly off colors, tight or loose connections, etc.).  Interestingly, there is also some sort of code/contest thing going on with each figure. The only bad news is that these are at the, now permanent, price point of $3.99. Although some retailers (notably Target) may be selling them at $2.99.

Lego has made a few breakthroughs in Lego Minifigures during the Collectable Minifig theme. This time around there seems to be a breakthrough in cloth capes. Featuring multi-piece capes with color printing! Whoa!

The Hobbit: Azog Minifigure!

SDCC Exclusive Azog Minifigure from FBTB

San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) attendies have another exclusive Lego minifigure to hunt down, named Azog. This exclusive minifig is based on a villain from The Hobbit film. The only way to get this Azog minifigure is to receive it randomly. They are not for sale at the Lego booth. Making this one of the hardest and rarest minifigures to find.

While first mentioned in the Hobbit novel, Azog was a very minor character. The film version of The Hobbit is where Azog, as a character, was greatly expanded. A giant pale Orc with a vendetta.

The Lord of the Rings, the Tower of Orthanc (10237) Reviewed @ Eurobricks

Rufus's The Tower Of Orthanc Review 1

The first full review for the new Lego, the Lord of the Rings, the Tower of Orthanc (10237) has been released, and it is over at Eurobricks. Rufus has written up a super cool review, showcasing every tiny detail of this towering tower. Oddly enough Lego has made two conflicting sets in the same release. To put it bluntly the Wizard Battle (79005) is a mini version of the Tower of Orthanc. So, if you cannot afford the full price, the smaller mini set is a good alternative. As Rufus points out in his review, the white wizard Saruman is actually different in both sets, meaning that if you are a completist then you will need both.

Rufus's The Tower Of Orthanc Review 3

The Tower of Orthanc is a full six floors, with 2,359 pieces, and really is one of the tallest Lego models to date. It measures 28″ tall (71cm), which is over 2 feet! The inclusion a fully posable and working brick built Ent is wonderful. And although, the inclusion of an Eagle is also great, it is a shame that it is a molded figure. At least it can be replaced with the Lego Creator Fierce Flyer (31004) which makes a great brick built eagle.

The overall opinion is that this is a great set from Lego, which features an unbelievable amount of black bricks. The price to brick ratio (8.5¢) is also reasonable, which is rare for a licensed set.

The Lord of the Rings: Helm’s Deep

Rich-K & Big J’s Lord of the Rings: Helm's Deep Elves

Helm’s Deep. For most, it is probably the most iconic scene from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. People have been creating all sorts of stuff based off of this legendary battle. Even I was creating Lego scenes and doodling Helm’s Deep throughout Middle School. Who knew that it would be Peter Jackson who would achieve everyones dream when he created his version for film.

When Lego announced that they were getting the Lord of the Rings license, the first question was whether or not they would do their own version of Helm’s Deep. Lego did not disappoint. In the first wave for the theme they released the awesome The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of Helm’s Deep 9474 . But for some, it still wasn’t enough.

GOEL KIM uploaded these photos of Helm’s Deep, created by Rich-K & Big J. This MOC is truly impressive. With over 150,000 bricks and 1,700 minifigs this has to be one of the largest LOTR builds out there. The Battle of the Hornburg is only 90% complete. With a massive tower, and more detailing to add. There are even more photos at MOCPages.

It’s not hard to imagine Théoden leading a final charge at dawn, and Gandalf arriving just in time to save the day.

Lego Tower Of Orthanc

Lego Tower Of Orthanc, from Brickset

Lego Lord of the Rings gets a new mega set this summer with the Tower of Orthanc (No. 10237). Poor old Saruman will have to live his downfall over and over again. Isengard has never looked better at 2,359 pieces. This will certainly take the majority of a day to build, which is not a problem. The problem is that at 6 floors tall, totaling over 2 feet tall (28in or 73cm), most people will not have room to display this set without having to specifically make room for it. Make sure to check out the the designers video below!

Lego Tower Of Orthanc Details

The Tower of Orthanc will come with minifigs for Saruman, Grima Wormtongue, Gandalf, a random Uruk-hai, and an Orc Pitmaster. Not only that but you will get a rare Great Eagle, and a brick build Ent. You can now reenact all of your favorite scenes, such as the great wizard battle and defeat of Gandalf. One of the rooms of this great tower contains the Palantír of Orthanc (with a light brick!), where Saruman communicates directly with Sauron. You can even reenact Gandalf’s call for help, with a Great Eagle rescuing him just in time. Or, the fall and destruction of the tower as the Ent join battle with the evil Orcs. This set is full of fun details. Hopefully soon, we will get a Treebeard figure that we can add to the battle.
