The Wizard Of Oz VS The Lego Movie

This is what happens when the Wizard of Oz gets all mixed up with the Lego Movie. The Wizard of Bricksburg is a mashup created by th_squirrel. It is based off of their Wizard of Oz scene (see below). This version is starring Bad Monkey, the Spacecrow, the Tin Emmet, Lucy, the Cowardly Pirate, and the Wicked Businessman of the West. It is a great example of mixing up Lego collections to create something new. The yellow brick road is a simple collection of 1×2 and 1×1 yellow plates, which lead your eye straight to the Minifigures. A bunch of red flowers are growing off to the side which also help to guide the eye. The brick built background and forced perspective techniques are the highlight of this Lego MOC. Everything is Lego, even the mountains and the Emerald City. What really helps it all fit together is the shallow depth of field from a DSLR camera.

The Flying Lion, An Imperial Frigate

The Flying Lion is an Imperial Frigate built by lego_sleepless_night. This Lego ship can run down any pirates operating at sea. The design features a red and black theme with gold highlighting. It matches the flag well. So well that this Lego MOC almost looks like an official release. It fits into the style and scale of the 80s-90s Pirates theme. It has three masts and the techniques used to build them match the old sets. There is even a rope running from stern to bow. A few of the great details include the wings / lionhead on the cabin, the wrap around walkway, and the ladder/ropes all the way up to the crows nest. The frigate comes equipped with a duel anchor system, and even has a monkey stowaway.

Rub-A-Dub-Dub Two Men In A Tub

Two men in a tub (does the monkey count as three?) sailing the high seas. What kind of trouble will they get into? This Lego MOC is called “Shark Attack!” and is created by DarthBricks. Built as an entry into Vignweek, the challenge this time is to create a classic pirate themed vignette. There are some really neat ideas in this scene. The shark fins being created out of Axe heads is great, you can see that they are attached to the base by being wedged into a little lever base. That simple blue base has just enough detail to be recognizable as water. The layer of transparent 1×2 and 1×1 bricks helps. These two pirates look like they might be in danger. They better throw away their fish before they become food.

Tigers, Elephants, And Bears! The Lego Animal Stackers.

Here is a super fun project. These are the Animal Stackers, created by Adam Dodge. They are based on 3×3 cubes and feature a single stud on top. Allowing them to easily stack on one another. A sort of Lego Totem. This series has 2 sets of six. The North American set contains an Owl, Raccoon, Moose, Polar Bear, Beaver, and a Narwhal. The African set contains a Monkey, Tiger, Elephant, Panda, Rhino, and a Crocodile. There are also a few Stackers on their own, such as the Eagle and Penguin.

Happy Lego Lunar New Year

Happy Lunar New Year. The year of the Horse is ready to begin. Flickr user Ryoutachan22 posted this super cute collection of the 12 Zodiac signs. Believe it or not, these were built by a 7 year old. Which, puts my own building skills to shame. These cute animals are a great example of how much variety you can achieve with only one shape (sphere).

Can you can match up the Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and Boar with their Lego representation?

“Do Not Feed” — Mosaic Window Display

Hilary Leung and Steadibrick created this wonderful 3D mosaic window display titled “Do Not Feed.” This display is currently up in the Sherway Gardens Lego store in Toronto. It is not everyday that you see people combining a typical Lego mosaic with 3D objects, which is a shame because it can look great. As usual the pixelated 8-bit style design is a great fit with the blocky Lego. Everything is just so cute.
